This page walks you through your first evening in Nareth, from your account and character creation to the first chapter of the Chronicle. If you remember only one thing: visit Aldo, the Chronicler – he starts your story.
Before you set out
- Create an account on the website. One account logs you in to both the website and the game. Usernames are 4–16 characters (lowercase letters and numbers); passwords are 8–16 characters with both letters and numbers, no accented letters.
- Delete code. When you register you set a 7-digit code – in the game it confirms deleting a character. Write it down somewhere safe.
- Download and install – see System requirements and download.
- Log in to the game with the same username and password you use on the website.
Faction
Three factions fight the Ash King in Nareth: the Order of the Blood Moon, the Suncrown Alliance and the Azure Veil League – and each guards a secret. You don't choose a faction in the character creator: every new character starts in the same place, without a faction. In the Chronicle you meet the envoys of all three, and you choose your faction at the end of Chapter 6, at level 50 – per character, so each of your characters can side with a different faction. More: Factions.
Character creation
The character selection screen has four character slots per account; click an empty slot to open the character creator.
Race and class – two separate choices
- Your race is your character's people and body: Human, Shadowblooded, Demonblooded or half-elf (the peoples of the four starting heroes). More: Races.
- Your class is how you fight: Ironvowed, Moonshade, Ashcaller or Runecaller (the Dark Elf unlocks after level 300). Each has two paths and a resource of its own. More: Classes.
- The starting heroes are fixed pairs: Ironvowed (human), Moonshade (Shadowblooded), Ashcaller (Demonblooded), Runecaller (half-elf).
- Your starting city depends on your realm: Bloodmoon Keep, Suncrown Keep or Veilharbor.
Creator steps
- Class – each card shows the class name and role; on the right you see its description and starting attributes.
- Gender (male or female) and build.
- Race – on the Appearance panel.
- Appearance – hairstyle, armour preview, animations, rotation.
- Enter a name, then click Create.
Character selection
The cards show each character's name, level, class and race; the right panel shows details of the selected character (guild, playtime, base attributes). Double-click a card to enter the game. Keys: Enter to play, Del to delete, Esc to go back, 1–4 to select a slot.
Your first login
Every new character starts in the same place, whatever faction they will later choose. When you log in, the game welcomes you and tells you that Aldo, the Chronicler awaits you with the first chapter. In your bag you will find the Hero's Journal, where you can follow the season, your assignments and, later, your renown with your faction.
Starting the Chronicle
The Chronicle is the game's 30-chapter main story. It begins like this:
- At level 1 you receive letters (1. Ashmarked, The Age of Ashes, Side stories). Open a letter and choose Continue or Later.
- Visit Aldo, the Chronicler. His Chronicle option gives you the chapter's text and task. Aldo stands in the cities and at the starting point of the regions, next to the Ferryman.
- The first chapter sends you to the starting valley.
- At the end of Chapter 6, as Act I draws to a close, you choose your faction (see Factions).
Chapters unlock new regions for travel; see Travel. For a spoiler-free look at the story: The Chronicle.
The first levels
Quests guide you through the starting regions and give you your first gear. The Chronicle's recommended order in the early regions:
| Chapter | Recommended level | Location |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | your realm's capital (Bloodmoon Keep / Suncrown Keep / Veilharbor) |
| 2 | 10 | Green Gloom |
| 3 | 20 | Riven Spine |
| 4 | 30 | Riven Spine, Silenced Library |
| 5 | 40 | Temple of the Ash Cult (dungeon) |
The level cap is 300. More: Levels and progression.
When you die
When you die, the You have died panel shows who killed you and what the death will cost you. You have two options:
- Here – revive on the spot (after 10 seconds),
- In town – revive at the region's starting point (after 7 seconds).
If a monster kills you, from level 10 onwards there is a chance to lose experience; after reviving, the game tells you the actual loss. Details: Death and Revival.
