Item Upgrading

Forging I–V at the Ancient Forge, Runebinding at the Runebinder, the Binding Enchant and the item tooltip – everything that makes your gear stronger.

Good gear in Nareth does not just lie on the ground – it has to be forged, honed and reshaped. This page gathers the tools of item upgrading, from forging to rerolling a property.

Forging I–V

Weapons and armour grow stronger through five forging ranks (Forging I–V). Forging always succeeds: nothing breaks, nothing drops back a rank, and no luck scrolls are needed. What it takes is materials and gold – every rank asks for stronger materials than the one before.

  • Every rank raises the item's base values.
  • Ranks III and V also add one new property to the item.
  • A forged item shows a small anvil icon and its rank next to its name, for example "Forged III".

The Ancient Forge

Forging takes place at the Ancient Forge. Its master is Kormos Bertalan, the Ancient Smith – a dwarven smith of the Ironhorn clan whose anvil dates back to the age of the Dawnstone. You'll find him in all three capitals (Bloodmoon Keep, Suncrown Keep, Veilharbor).

Before you forge, a window shows you everything: the current and the forged item, the required materials (how many you have and how many you need – anything missing is shown in red) and the cost. Close the window with the X button or Esc, and nothing is forged.

Runebinding

Runebinding rerolls a single property of an item – everything else stays as it is. The Runebinder stands next to the smith in every city; you can bind the same item again and again, but every further binding costs more (gold and rune dust). Details: Runebinding.

Rarity and the item tooltip

The rarity of weapons and equipment is set by how many properties (bonuses) they carry. The item's name is shown in its rarity colour, with a "rarity · type" line beneath it:

RarityColourProperties
Normalwhite0
Magicblue1–2
Rareyellow3–4
Legendaryorange5 or more

The tooltip also compares the item with what you are currently wearing in that slot (weapon, armour, helmet, shield, boots): differences in attack value, defence and magic attack appear in green (better) or red (worse). It also tells you which classes can wear the item.

Binding Enchant

The Binding Enchant lets you keep one property while reshaping the rest – the reverse of Runebinding.

  1. Drag the enchant onto a weapon or armour piece that has properties.
  2. In the window that opens, choose the property that stays (marked with a green dot) – every other one is marked "reshapes".
  3. Press Keep – the chosen property stays in place with its value, and the others are reshaped. The kept property type will not roll again among the others.

If you choose Cancel or close the window, nothing changes.

  • Ancient runes – runes and runewords for your sockets. See Runes.
  • Appearance – how your gear looks, independent of its properties. See Appearance and Mounts.
  • Material Bag – unlimited storage for forging materials. See Storage and Inventory.

Crafting (in development)

The K key opens the Crafting window, with three tabs: Cooking (fish and fruit into food and drink with temporary bonuses), Smithing (mined ore into forging materials) and Alchemy (herbs into vials and rune fragments). Ingredients are taken from your bag, and a recipe becomes known the first time you make it. The interface is finished; recipes become available with a server update.
